The .SE country-code extension was set up in 1986 and delegated to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was really restrictive, so a very small number of domain names were booked. Persons were permitted to secure solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a requirement, i.e. merely Swedish persons, commercial entities and organizations were able to acquire a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized considerably and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been increasing each year.
