An SRV record, which is short for Service record, is a DNS entry which is used to define the servers which run a particular service for a domain name. Basically, you are able to use your domain not only for a site, but also for an instant messaging server, a video streaming host or a Voice-Over-IP server, for instance, while you still have a website with it. If you create the SRV record, you may choose what Internet Protocol it's going to use, on which port the connection to the particular server is going to be established in addition to the priority and the weight of the record assuming that there are several SRV records for the very same service. The latter option will allow you to use different machines for load balancing and redundancy. Using this type of DNS records, you can use the same domain for a number of purposes and even with different companies in case the same one is not able to provide all services you need.
